Christopher Nolan didn't just get Oscar gold for "Oppenheimer," he also made a whole lot of green. "Oppenheimer" — which took home seven Academy Awards this weekend, including Best Picture — earned more than $950 million at the global box office, buoyed in part by its 70-millimeter IMAX release. Nolan's earnings were boosted by box office escalators as well as bonuses for winning both Best Director and Best Picture, according to the report. Reports of Nolan's payday arrived on the heels of a Forbes report that Margot Robbie took home $78 million in gross earnings thanks largely to the massive success of "Barbie", which raked in nearly $1.5 billion at the box office. Christopher Nolan's quirks as a director are well known, from the absence of chairs on his sets to his refusal to use a smartphone or email. Robert Downey Jr., who appeared in Nolan's historical epic "Oppenheimer" this past summer, says the 53-year-old director has a very specific quality that makes him a great leader. "He won't ask anyone to do anything that he's not a thousand percent willing to do himself, twice as hard," Downey Jr. told Variety in a joint interview with costars Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt last month. A Nolan set, Murphy said, can feel "a bit like a private, intimate laboratory," something he appreciates as a performer. A sleeper hit at the box office, the film is a "healthy sign" for the romantic comedy genre and other mid-budget Hollywood flicks, said Scott Meslow, author of "From Hollywood With Love: The Rise and Fall (and Rise Again) of the Romantic Comedy." In the seven weeks since, the romantic comedy has tallied $170 million globally, including $80 million from domestic theaters, according to data from Comscore. Between 2004 and 2010, Hollywood consistently released between 15 and 25 romantic comedy or romance films each year. Meslow said there was no rom-com "kill shot," a film or series of films that sparked the decline in theatrical releases of the genre. While some films will still be released only on streaming platforms, Hollywood has rediscovered the importance of theatrical as part of overall downstream revenue.
